ABOUT SHATTERED RECORDS

Shattered Records builds on the legacy of an industry landmark: J Street Recorders. Brian Wheat, bassist for Sacramento’s hometown hard-rock band Tesla, built the first incarnation of the studio inside his midtown J Street Victorian home in the early 2000’s.

Soon after, a stand-alone J Street Recorders was built from the ground up next door to Wheat’s home. Designed from a napkin sketch, the full-service studio hosted clients that included Pat Travers, Papa Roach, and The Deftones. Shattered Records’ Jack O’Donnell’s connection with J Street started as a fifteen-year-old intern in 2003, and became assistant engineer until a devastating fire in 2010 forced a move to a new facility in the Alhambra Triangle.

The Alhambra location is purpose-built from the exterior walls in and was designed by the legendary Vincent Van Haaff. In 2016, Jack was brought in as manager to open the studio doors to the public and operate as chief engineer. Being the pre-eminent place to make music in Sacramento, two Tesla albums were recorded here.

In 2021, Jack, now an owner, launched a two-year, floor-to-ceiling renovation that prioritized flexibility and accessibility while augmenting the Van Haaff design. Specialized and enhanced recording spaces were developed along with the ability to create a customizable vibe for any session.

As community leaders we feel we have a responsibility to be a part of a thriving and dynamic ecosystem. By working with area non-profits, educational organizations, and businesses, we provide access and opportunity today and for the next generation.

We’re here to share our passion for creativity and to build a community where our clients can flourish. For music, podcasting, video, live performance, and more, Shattered Records is a home, a playground, and a top-notch facility where ideas bloom.
